Who will be the next Secretary of the DOH?

With the expected changes in the cabinet and the remaining 5 months of the Arroyo administration, DSWD secretary Esperanza I. Cabral will replace Francisco T. Duque III as health secretary, with the latter appointed as Civil Service Commission (CSC) chairman. The health sector welcomes the appointment citing Cabral's good track record and saying the president made a good choice.

Who is Esperanza I. Cabral?
  • a cardiologist
  • appointed Social Welfare chief in February 2006
  • earned her medical degree from the University of the Philippines
  • served as director of state-run Philippine Heart Center
  • consultant for the Dangerous Drugs Board and the Food and Drug Administration (formerly Bureau of Food and Drugs Administration).
The current DOH secretary Francisco T. Duque III will abandon his bet for congress in his hometown of Pangasinan because of a 7-year fixed term as CSC chairman.

Changes in the cabinet will take effect soon.
