All About the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. It is an assessment test for English proficiency. If you're planning to work as a nurse in an English speaking country, then taking this test is a must.

  • Cost: Php 8,640 - test fee; Php 5k to 8k - Review fee (depending on Review Center); prepare at least Php 15k
  • About the test: composed of 4 sub-tests - listening, reading, writing, speaking.
  • Test types: Academic Module and General Training. Nurses should take Academic.
  • Length of test: Half day (9am - 12pm), plus speaking which takes 15 minutes.
  • Countries which require IELTS:
  1. USA - a requirement for NCLEX, CGFNS, and VisaScreen. Accepted band scores are at least 6.5 overall and at least 7.0 in Speaking; varies among states.
  2. UK - the very first requirement before applying to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Accepted band score is at least 7.0 in all 4 tests.
  3. Canada - almost the same with USA, varies among provinces.
  4. Australia and New Zealand - Accepted band score is at least 7.0 in all 4 tests; accepts successive, accumulated scores.
  5. other English-speaking countries
  • Testing centers: IELTS is given either by IDP Philippines or British Council Philippines.
  • Where: the test is held usually in hotels in Manila and in the provinces.
  • When: done 3 times a month in Manila, once a month in the provinces.
  • How to apply: in person, through courier/post, or through an agent.
  • Requirements:
  1. Completed Application Form
  2. valid National ID - any of the following may be considered as a valid ID: Passport, PRC Professional ID, SSS ID card, GSIS e-card.
  3. photocopy of ID
  4. 2 pieces of 2 x 2 (or passport-sized) coloured photos
  5. test fee of PhP 8640.00; can be paid in cash, bank draft or cashier's/manager's check.

Note: Be wise when to take the test for it's only good for 2 years. If you will apply in UK through the NMC, it is advisable to take IELTS through the British Council. For any questions just leave your comments.
